Video: "Metamorphosis"

This time-lapse video shows the expanding wings of an adult antlion shortly after emerging from the cocoon. Notice how this captive young adult crawls around frenetically on the sand—first backwards, then forwards, as if "unlearning" its old style of locomotion while practicing a new one.

In the wild, an antlion would climb a tree or plant to let its wings hang freely as they expand and harden. When making this video, the filmmaker should have provided an upright twig inside the container so the antlion's wings could develop properly. See Observing and Capturing Antlions for information on proper care of captive antlions.
