Animal Liberation, originally published in 1975, was "the first modern work to argue that those who oppose human suffering must oppose inflicting suffering on animals" [publisher's description]. While perhaps not as philosophically sophisticated as Tom Regan's The Case for Animal Rights (see below), Singer's book is revelatory in its discussion of the ethics of modern meat production and the use of animals in scientific, miltary, and commercial research.
"Edited by the two leading philosophers in the animal protection movement, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of historical and contemporary writings that address both the nature of nonhuman animals as well as our duties to them."
"Zoos are places where animals are protected, kept safe from the ravages of the outside world and sheltered from extinction, right? Not necessarily, writes investigative reporter Alan Green, who takes his readers behind the bars in Animal Underworld to tell an unsettling tale of deception and cruelty."
The Case for Animal Rights (1984) is the most thorough treatment of the subject of animal rights yet published. Regan examines the major philosophical issues that underlie human treatment of animals, and offers a thoughtful, rationally articulated, moral theory of animal rights.
"Unquestionably the most thoughtful work ever written on the tragic practice of 'euthanizing' healthy companion animals. Not everyone will agree with its findings. But no one who truly cares about companion animals can ignore the daunting challenge the book places before us." [Tom Regan, author of The Case for Animal Rights]
"Zoo professionals, activists, conservation biologists, and philosophers present perspectives on the future of zoos and aquariums, the treatment of animals in captivity, and the question of whether the individual, the species, or the ecosystem is the most important focus in conservation efforts."
"In this witty, moving, and impeccably researched book, Steven Wise demonstrates that the cognitive, emotional, and social capacities of apes should at last entitle them to freedom from imprisonment and abuse. Rattling the Cage has everything needed to convince judges, scientists, lawyers, and the millions of others who care deeply about animals of the injustice of denying them basic legal rights."
The authors, a medical doctor and a veterinarian, "spent a decade studying comparative anatomy and physiology, reviewing treatment notes, and perusing scientific literature as well as medical history books. Their work resulted in Sacred Cows and Golden Geese, a book that focuses on the science of [the] hotly debated topic" of animal testing.
"A comprehensive directory of cosmetics, household, and personal care product companies that have made a compassionate commitment not to test on animals. More than 500 cruelty-free companies with updated listings of products, toll-free numbers, availability, and much more."
